More than just glue | making lanterns lights the way for Dartmouth

When the warm, soft glow of lanterns light up the cold, dark winter night for Candlelit Dartmouth, it’s more than just a fun, uplifting and connecting lantern parade. It’s a time for the community to come together and support each other – it’s part of making a difference.

That ‘making-a-difference’ starts with the lantern-making in the industrious creative engine room for the festival’s famous workshops at Dartmouth Community Chest – wonderfully transformed from a warm hub, cafe and community venue to a hubbub of art and activity.

Running on Saturdays in October and November, the lantern-making workshops bring creativity, camaraderie and community together for the big event that the whole town enjoys.

It’s what Dartmouth Community Chest is all about – the wealth of connection in a collaborative way, building for the future as a warm beacon.

It points to the unsung, behind-the-scenes work that Dartmouth Community Chest does and the community cafe hosts.

Warm meals, warm welcome, warm care in the winter – and all year round. Plus the events for families: the food delivery, the support, the sharing… the stuff that communities are made of. And it is so often at the frontline.

When the lanterns march through the town this November, they won’t just be carrying ‘candles’; they will be carrying a visible testament to the strength, unity, and capability of the community.

As you watch the harbour light up this year, remember the engine room in the Market Square. True community support isn’t just about managing adversity – it’s about creating joy, together.
